Biography:
Melvin Murdock—“Murdock” to every soul who knows him—is the chief engineer of the pirate vessel The Sea Wolf. A short, stout Earthling from the dredges of what was once New York, Murdock is a gifted mechanic who did a tour as an engineer in the UEP Navy before casting his lot with Captain Julius Verndock’s crew. The grease in his hair matches the grime under his nails; he is hard to look at and harder to offend, and he curses every other word. He is the one soul aboard with license to speak to the captain as bluntly as he pleases—Julius tolerates from Murdock what he would from no other. When the crew is shorthanded Murdock will command a fighter squadron from the cockpit, but he is at his best down in the engine room, keeping the aging Sea Wolf flying on stubbornness, spare parts, and sheer skill. He answers to “Murdock” alone, and woe to the poor fool who calls him Melvin.
